The Nigerian government Wednesday  received a grant of N2billion from the government of Japan to support the nation’s drive to boost power generation capacity, through solar energy.

The donation under  “The Project for Introduction of Clean Energy by Solar Electricity Generation System”, a statement by the Japanese Embassy, made available in Abuja said, “Japan donated 0.98 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 2 billion Naira or 7.84 million US Dollars) for the provision of solar electricity generation systems and to tackle the issue of climate change on top of 78.76 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 157.52 billion Naira or 63 billion US Dollars) which has already been extended in order to assist the power sector in Nigeria.

“Concerned by the growing effects of global warming and

challenge of power supply, which the G8 and African countries consider as the major impediments to sustainable development, wealth

creation and the eradication of poverty, the Exchange of Notes of the project was signed  by His Excellency Mr. Ryuichi Shoji, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and His Excellency Mr. Darius Ishaku, Honourable Minister of State for Power of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”

“The Grant Agreement under the Exchange of Notes was signed between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Federal Ministry of Power in Nigeria”
